Members of the shipping industry were last week briefed on issues related to container security on the Port of Kingston. The briefing was conducted by the United States Container Security Initiative team in Kingston, during the Shipping Association of Jamaica’s (SAJ) Lunch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, July 17.
The team suggested new ways to secure shipments and minimise tampering. Representatives from the Jamaica Customs Department were also on hand to answer questions posed by the participants.
Held at the SAJ’s Fourth Avenue offices, the presentation showed ways in which shipments may become contaminated and measures that may be used to safeguard these shipments. The seminar was sponsored by Zim Integrated Shipping, through their local agent, Carib Star Shipping.
Kimani Peterkin, manager, marketing and transshipment, Carib Star Shipping, said the company was pleased to have sponsored the presentation. “ZIM remains committed to securing the integrity of its containers and delivering the highest quality service, and as such, our willingness to support such a forum was an easy decision. Our customers had requested such a forum and we were happy to oblige with the cooperation of the SAJ,” Peterkin said.
Peterkin added that ZIM has served the Jamaican market for over 40 years and is the only major shipping line that has established unbroken service to the Port of Kingston, supporting Jamaican businesses and citizens by taking Jamaican exports out into the world and bringing raw materials and consumer goods to this island without fail for decades. The line offers services in Kingston as well as in Montego Bay (through transshipment via Kingston). Carib Star Shipping, a fully owned subsidiary, is ZIM’s agent in Jamaica and has operated in this capacity since 1989.
